I purchased this a few years back for $35.00. It took some convincing to get the dealer to sell it to me. He was concerned that some one may try to sell it as a real 14-D. Looks pretty good to me !!!
I have had offers up to $500.00 for it but its not for sale.

Coin buyers beware and know what you are buying before you hand over the money.

Interesting. Do you know how its weight compares to that of a real cent? Do you know where the dealer got the coin? What're the most obvious flaws that show that it's counterfeit?

I could ask questions all day. haha. I once spent an hour going through a box of counterfeit coins, and to say that I was mesmerized is an understatement. I'm so paranoid about fakes, but nonetheless, they're fascinating.

looks pretty real to me, the hair looks kinda funny though

The "fake" weighs a point more than a real one.

Here is another pic of the fake and a pic of a 1912-D for comparison.
To me the 14-D looks very weakly struck and lacks detail. " It just dont look right"

I must admit that to me this "coin" is a one of a kind. It may not be real but I challenge you to find another like it.

Look at the shoulder, there shouldn't be a VDB if its real, thats one way to tell if its an altered one.

Do you know if this one was made from counterfeit dies, or altered from a real coin?

I think this one is struck from counterfeit dies.

Yeah I think so too. Look at the details in his face, they're not the same as a real coin. His lip is slightly different, as is his nose and some of the hair detail. Plus the surface of the coin, the blank area, looks funny.

Might just be 1914 with the D added. You should be able to tell that with some good magnification. The D does look too low. Just another idea.

I agree with you. Most counterfeit coins will have a mintmark either removed or added. It is the best way to do it. It takes a special machine to mint a coin. Pouring coins is another method but does not leave the coin looking as nice as this one. You own it, don't sell it. That coin in the wrong hands will cost people money. I would be very angry if I spent a load of money on a fake coin. Keep it for yourself.

Now that's one of the most convincing fakes I've ever seen. It's a masterpiece, really. Amazing.

The key detail that looks different to me is the eyes - if you really compare them closely, they are definitely different.

Can I just ask, was this a rare year then, for someone to go to such great lengths to produce a fake one?
We do have fake gold Celtic coins being circulated, they are made from melted down gold pieces of that time so the gold if anylised would be the same as that period.
They have even folled the dealers and the museums!
But I think ageing copper is somehow a lot more difficult?

Hello SukiSal, The 1914-d cent - which can be found in England in the training areas from world war one - is the third or fourth rarest standard production cent. In very high grades some others are worth more but in the lowest circulated grades it is very pricey. It would have been counterfeited to be sold to collector's as it obviously cost more than a cent to make. Errors and varieties can be very very expensive but amongst standard production the top dogs are the 1909-s; 1909-s vdb; the 1914-d and the 1931-s. It could easily be sold for more than a common gold sovereign. best regards, siegfried schlagrule

The 1922 Plain is probably the easiest one to fake, I have seen several of them.
And the 24 D is a hard one for the new kids to get as well.

But I have also seen a couple copper plated 43Ds that would stick to a magnet as quick as you please, I have even spent one.

I have a 1914, and the LIBERTY is a little slanted on it. With all the closeups, how about one on the D

This is the best I can do with my camera.

Pics aren't all that bad. I'd say I'd be 90% certain the D has been added. If you compare the D with your 1912 D you will notice the left top and left bottom extend to a small point as most D's do. You should notice that the D has unequal points to it. Also I noticed some inconsistencies around the D. Sort of like small bubbles. With the condition of the coin, notice how defined the date is. Well struck. Doesn't seem to carry to the mint mark. That's about all I can say about it from just pics. I think it's altered, not stamped.

These pics are from " PCGS - Coin grading and counterfeit detection guide " I think I can post these ??
