Scored today a vintage Dunhill lighter

Out on the road today, I hit a small town antique shop and picked up this awesome vintage Dunhill lighter for a final negotiated price of a flat $37.00 .. It's all sterling with a fired on undamaged black enamel. The hallmarks are for the city of London with a date hallmark for the year 1924. I think I'll just keep this as is in a uncleaned relic state. It is monogramed JS, but I think lighters of this classic type will almost always have a mono of the original owner. I've only found one other Dunhill lighter for a deal in all the miles and years I've been looking for expensive things sold cheap.

I think I remember you posting that. The only Dunhill lighter I ever found was a flea market and it was $5.00 and I think it also sold to someone in Australia for $68.00 It was the roller style and the guy who bought it also fixed them up to resell. Dunhill name is one to not pass up. I found one of their tobacco pipes for $3.00 and it sold for $160.00 to China. Check out the market on those. Some Dunhill pipes bring thousands

I've been a road peddler for 20 plus years. Others like me I know either gamble, chase women or get lots of drinks for free. My boss is very aware of me doing it and thinks it's awesome I can kill time that way. Beats the one dummy we had in Nevada. His wife left him for the holidays as they always fought and he got drunk in a Casino and blew through $14K on the company CC. I was sent out to take all the stuff of ours back. He was flat broke after that and I called the boss for him to see if it was ok to give him $150. for a bus to California. The boss said I could as long as I stick around and watch him get on the bus.

I'm curious about the line above. Is it just me, or does it seem like a lot of people who CHR and go saling, have addictive personalities? I know I do. My lady friend loves this hobby because it keeps me out of the bars, since I usually get up at 6am on weekends to go saling.

That sounds fun. I've only gone sailing once in my life. I get up early also. Did yesterday and drove 600+ miles in Montana & Wyoming back home. Some people don't like to drive, but I do.

I saw a Dupont once in a estate jewelry shop and no smart phone then to check the price they had. I did when I got home on the desk top and found it was an okay price, but not good enough to turn for much more. It was beautiful lighter and all enameled. I don't think I've ever seen another in the used market again?. This Dunhill was a rare encounter at this price. Original the guy had it for $45.00 and said he'd let it go for $37.00

As far as addictive personalities and garage "sailing" goes I would have to say, speaking for myself, yes I have an addictive personality. My hobbies keep me out of trouble so to speak. That and I'm too old to be messing around anymore, drinking, barhopping, fighting and womanizing like the good old days, lol.

The odds of winning at this game beat the Vegas odds all to hell imo. So many people ask me how do you find these things and how can I be successful at it. I tell em you just need to look high and low, plus understand what is unique about one object to all the others. All and all you have to have a passion for it and do think it can be taught.

I saw one in antique mall marked $75. That was before smart phones. I almost shat myself when I checked sold prices. I went back to buy it and it was gone.

I recently went to an Estate Auction and they auctioned off quite a few Dunhill Pipes! Most went fairly cheap but not knowing them, I passed on all of them. Never again! Thanks for posting the lighter which lead to the info on the pipes!

Your welcome Frank, I have found that most pipes, by makers from Denmark, London and a hand full from Italy, have the best value and anything not from those regions are not so desired. That's all I'll be looking for and all others are a waist of money unless you get them at like a dollar or something?. The type wood grain has a factor in desirability also. Many straight wood grains are more desired then the fancy ones. Don't know why, but that seems to be the case I've noted. Overall Dunhills are the top of the heap on brand name pipes and custom makers bring big bucks also. Maybe I should be a custom pipe maker

I have done well with pipes in the past but have not come across any in the last 6 months. For the pipes worth over $75.00, I would spend $10 to get them cleaned and sterilized by a popular pipe shop and they sell for more. I found an unsmoked briar pipe( forgot the name) last year and sold it BIN for $175.00. Sold within a couple hours and I discovered that $300.00 was not an unreasonable price. Never have I come across a Dunhill lighter though, only pipes. Great score!
