The Hohokam inhabited south central Arizona and were known for their sophisticated irrigation system. Of the various Southwest sedentary cultures, they were most influenced by the Mesoamerican civilizations to the south, particularly the cultures of NW Mexico. Thousands of village sites exist in the Santa Cruz Valley near Tucson. So far, only 2 of these sites have yielded pottery sherds with life forms. The first example here shows dancers with masks. Note how dancing is conveyed by having the figures on their toes. The way in which clasping hands are portrayed is also clever. Other sherds show rattle snakes, possibly horned rattlers, an Ibis, a traveler carrying a burden(perhaps reflecting the many migration myths of the SW tribes), and Kokopelli, the humpback flute player. These sherds date c. 950-1125 AD.

Awesome stuff, thanks for sharing! I've seen enough of 2&3 in my life to know that's a rattlesnake without a doubt. I can only imagine how they viewed such creatures, surely linking a bite from one to death.

That is so awesome !!!! NOTWORTY !!!
