US-Civil war Calvary Stirrup, ox balls and lead seal day.

My trusty hot spot had about 2 inches of frost, but managed to dig a stirrup and ox-balls. Then asked permission to detect at a farm I had my eyes on in a very historical town. They said yes. Only had an hour and just before leaving I dug the lead seal. Good sign. I am goign back tomorrow and goign to ask if they mind if I detect again. I wish I had asked if i could come back tomorrow when I initially asked. $:-\$

Nice finds!!! Dman found the same type iron stirrup in a CSA Cavalry Camp a couple of years ago. Nice save!!! HH.

I find the same style of stirrup at mid-1800s house sites. It is a civilian item, not CW. The reference guides say "commonly found in..." Suspender clips are also "commonly found in CW camps" yet they are not specifically CW items.

That said, you have a cool find there. I hope you use electrolysis to clean and preserve it.

cant imagine how that ox felt loseing those..what are all those lead seals for??found a couple never knew what they were . with the shoes you found your ox balls you almost got a compete one of your own :laughing7:

I think the seals were used by merchants. They would string up bundles of there goods and crimp the seal with there logo on them. I think they were used in England from 1300-1800. :dontknow:
