I would much like to see the back of your "buckle" ...

It is indeed a nice find, However it is a Great Seal insignia & perhaps not as old as one may assume.

The insignia is used to this day on may items ~ It may be tough to determine the exact age...

Thats actually a Rosette,and that style of the Great Seal was in use from 1902 -present day. :thumbsup:
 

thank you very much for the info.. My understanding is the homesite where I found this was pre civil war to 1940 when it burnt and was never rebuilt.. Have also found a few flat buttons and a token there.
 

You bet,it could very well pre date 1940,more than likely it does.Neat find! :thumbsup:

Yep, rosette. And a very nice one. :thumbsup: I have seen some posted on here, but none with the loop on back until recently. That's the second one in about a week with the loop still attached. I got one about two years ago without the loop and not in nearly as good a shape.

Nice find. :)

World War I U.S. Army cavalry horse bridle rosette. Heres one I found when I started detecting.
