Been a while since I had something worth posting.......This past week I got in touch with the manager of the local reservoirs (had a question regarding a possible siteI wanted to check out) and was really surprised how quickly he returned my call! Super nice guy, I told him I was looking to metal detect if it was possible. The area in question is no longer in the hands of the city so it was a no-go on that site. He did however, tell me about another place I might want to check out that was under his management. He also went on to tell me how they (the city) had acquired another 15 acres of land that nobody has used or been on since 1855 or so. (thanks again Mr. Rosenthal!) My plan was to make a beeline for this area but got waylaid along the way with the volume of CRAP that I kept coming across! Ended up detecting the trails and across and earthen dam for the better part of 4 hours.
I wasn't able to access the new area of 15 acres as the dam is washed out in one section and it's too deep/wide to jump across (trust me, I considered it but then thought of taking a dip with my detector, cell phone and pinpointer and decided against it) so I'll have to try and go on another day when it's cool like today and hit that other section. Over all it was pretty much a trash collection. You have to kind of expect it when you are sticking to the trails. People too lazy to carry out their pull tabs, bottle caps and cans, are also to lazy to throw them far into the woods so they all collect along the trail. . Overgrowth was a bit thick and I wasn't braving the sticker bushes without long pants! Maybe in the fall.....anyway......here are my finds. A few bullet casings, Peterson shotgun shell, mason jar top (stopped my heart for a sec...was at the base of a large tree...top up, with glass still attached, then I dug it out and saw it was just the top. Dug more but nothing else in the hole....) a church pin and a cool old button I need help with. I took a little soap and water to it and toothpicked it a bit but don't wanna do any more until I know if it's worth it or not. Can anyone ID the button? Thanks again for looking!
I also came across 2 benchmarks buried along the way......Mr Rosenthal, If anyone needs to find them again....I can lead them right to em!
It was also my first day out with my new Predator Tools Piranha 35! It did a GREAT job slicing through all the roots (and there are ALOT of them) and the sharpened edge that gravediggermax put on there for me made it even better! Thanks Max!
