As far as I know, all the US made WWI helmets were marked with a Z code, I've seen Marine and Army used/procured helmets all marked this way. Plus we used helmets made in Britain until we were able to get our production lines set up.

But you do raise a interesting question, and I will do some reading and see what I can come up with.
