06/13 Beach Gold & Silver

Snuck out late this afternoon and played at the beach for a few hours today ... Nabbed a few trinkets, an 18k 5.4g ring, a junk toe ring, and a Silver necklace with CZ encrusted pendant... Also got an interesting coin... About the size of a silver dollar. Fairly heavy - Anyone with any ideas on it?

I saw a box full of coins like that at a flea market. They were two for a dollar. Nice 18k ring.

Man, you and DRJOE PRIME are like gold vaccum cleaners! Maybe the two of you could get together and give a beach hunting simminar or sell a video. Most of us could learn something that could surely help out our detecting skills. Congrats again!

What I found out about the coin ...

This is one of a series of Chinese commemorative coins depicting the Emperors of the Qing Dynasty. This coin depicts Emperor Daoguang, who reigned from 1821-1850.

Size: 38mm
Weight: apx. 17.50 grams
Minted: between 1915 and 1980, not an original strike (reproduction)
Material: alloy of Silver, Lead and Iron and sometimes Tin

Note: Silver content could be as low as 20% or as high as 70%. Lead content is almost always 30% and the filler is Iron or Tin. Some people call this alloy Stannan. These coins were struck at many different mints and there was little quality control in the striking. No records remain of the content or mintage.

Mine weighs in at 19.6 g and acid tests as silver.
