Another find on the beaches of NC. Looks like a lead weight, very crude with a "10" stamped into it. Any idea of the age of this thing? Definitely doesn't look modern.
Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Lead was banned from paint in the late 70's because it presents a hazard to human health. Especially young children playing with toys painted with a lead based paint.

Because of the hazards lead presents, you'll find the newer lead down rigger weights have an epoxy coating.

Be sure to wash your hands after playing with your new find.

Many of the newer fishing weights are made from zinc, an element beneficial to human health.

Unfortunately for you both lead and zinc look identical and you have no way of knowing what your weight is made from.

But I'm betting on lead because zinc in salt water is sacrificial and your weight does not show any loss other than the missing eyelets.

In an nut shell, why the eyelets are missing from your fishing weight.

The brass wire was made from an alloy consisting of copper and zinc, the zinc a very reactive metal gave itself up to the elements either from minerals in the beach sand or the ocean's salt water.

Copper is more resilient to the oceans elements but once the zinc was lost from the brass the copper lost a valuable neighbor.

Copper based paints were often used an anti fouling paints.
