I have a Tejon with the stock 9x8 coil but am considering the 12x10 wide scan. We hunt relics mainly in fields and woods so is this a good coil for this application?

Thanks,

As stated by another person on a similar forum you will probably not gain much depth, but you will cover a much larger area.

I take it you have been talking with "D" from Memphis. He is a dedicated relic hunter and before he moved down to Memphis we did much hunting together. He was always finding more than anyone else. The only drawback I can see with the larger coil is hunting in the woods, and that is only because of the larger coil.

No matter which coil you use the Tejon is going to out-hunt most other detectors. If it wasn't so late in the detecting year I too would make the investment for the larger coil. However, with the coming of warm/hot weather; poison ivy; ticks; sweating; thirst; etc. I will hold off until the fall.

Thanks for the information. I think it is worth a try. We do a lot of hunting for CW artillery shells and while the 12x10 DD might not get more depth on a small target I think it will on a large deep targets.

Is the weight difference a significant factor between the stock coil and the 12x10?

I think the weight difference will be significant.

My friend in Memphis, the grunt, has told me a few times that he loves the coil but it really gets to his arm after a while. So, you can expect a bit more arm fatigue, but that is a great trade-off for relics.

Thanks for the information about the weight. I found this cw 20lb Parrot shell today with my stock 9x8 and it was over 2 and a half feet deep. I will still get a 12x10 in the future for certain hunting situations.

Awsome find VA! How deep was that find?

The shell was about two and a half feet deep. When I’m hunting for shells with the tejon I use all-metal in the VCO mode with the threshold just below audible and set the Disc 2 to scrap to make sure I blank out all Iron. The tejon can get a large shell at 4ft + with this set up. I got a very wide pattern on all metal and then checked it with the second discriminate and it blanked out which let me know it was Big Iron. I knew I had something good when I got below the plow line into undisturbed soil and still didn’t hit the target.

I've never weighed them to see the difference but, once you get used to swinging the 12"x10", you will barely notice the difference. Personally, the first long day of swinging it, my shoulder was sore as heck - went out the next day and didn't have any pain whatsoever. The pinpointing is what will take some getting used to. The 12"x10" is a "DD" as opposed to the 9"x8" being a concentric - they pinpoint VERY differently. Once you get the hang of that, you won't want to take that big boy off...

DD-777,

Thanks for the Info. I used a DD for years with my minelab sovereign so I think I will get the hang of it quickly. I always take the covers off my coils which seems to make them a lot lighter. I know in the long run it will decrease the life of the coil but I'm willing to deal with that for the reduction in weight. I think the DD will be a great addition to my Tejon for CW shell hunting especially.

It is heavier indeed and you feel it. I had one when they first came out and will be getting another one, but this one I want the longer cable on it so I can wade with it.
I would say it gets about the same depth as the stock coil, maybe a tad more, but the coverage is so much better which is a real plus at the beach

if you take off the coil cover it does help. Im gonna coat mine this time with truck bed liner and be done with the removing of coil covers. I dont use them now on my minelabs. its amazing how a thin piece of plastic like a coil cover can be felt.

it will wear your arm out,,,,,,not much more depth,,only my opinion,,,,,covers a lot more ground,,,,,

Very good insight from everyone ,thanks . I ordered the 12x10 tonight and I'm looking forward to giving it a try. I do a lot of CW shell hunting and cant wait to try it in a couple of places I know have deeeeep shells (earthworks and such). I really like the stock coil and it will probably remain my main coil but I needed a backup anyway.
