The boy didn't just find any old rusty stick on that school trip near Tingelstad/Brandbu — he yanked a 1,300-year-old single-edged sword from the Merovingian period (roughly 550–800 AD, right on the cusp of the Viking Age) out of a plowed field.

Exact measurements havn't yet been released, but Viking sword blades of this era are typically 4-6mm at the hilt end, tapering to around 2-3mm at the point.
