My son and I had the privilege of participating in the 150th commemoration of the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox last weekend. The ceremony of stacking arms was more emotional than I expected it to be. One sergeant broke down crying after hanging his accoutrements on the stack. The Yankees were quiet and reserved throughout the ceremony. We all had a few minutes to reflect on the events of the previous 4 years.
