Got out for the first time this year at a early 1700s site and got a couple 1600s buckles. And some odds and ends. I think these buckles are some of my favorite things to find. Got my first barber quarter and some wheats and indians.

Love those buckles. Some reales should be nearby

Digging two complete spur buckles from the 1600s is very impressive. I would keep searching that spot - cover every square inch. Hopefully, you'll pull up a Spanish cob. The designs on both buckles is awesome. You might consider a long soak in mineral oil for treatment.

Very nice buckles. I have never found ones that old, and must now add to my bucket list. Great job .. congrats!

Amazing finds I wish there were places that old here. Great job on the buckles and other relics freakin cool stuff

Awesome finds mate !!

I wouldn’t put your finds in any kind of mineral oil as stated above. ( no disrespect for the OP ) No need to ruin the patina. Took 400 years to acquire. Even water isn’t a great idea because it’s aggressive on copper alloys. Just my 2 cents.

Mechanical cleaning and then conserve with renaissance wax. Mechanical cleaning takes a bit longer but it’s worth it. Especially for finds like that!

Really great job! Definitely go search that place thoroughly. There’s more !

I agree - no olive oil. I stopped using it. Anyway those are some bad a$$ buckles. I have found 3 halves of the really ornate one including the cross bar but never a whole one. Would like very much to find a whole one.

Great hunt. Congratulations :icon_thumright:

I had suggested mineral oil - not olive oil. Olive oil has acidic properties.

After wrecking some really early copper coins, I now no longer use any kind of fluids. Just mechanical cleaning. Andre's pencils are my favorite but toothpicks work in a pinch. No need to make old stuff look new either.

wow not one but two 1600's spectacles!!!! So nice congrats and thanks for sharing. That barber quarter is not bad either!

finally back on a computer, thanks everybody, hope some older silver turns up next time, I only brushed them and put on renaissance wax. not a fan of any oils.

Got ya. I don't like how the olive oil muddied up the contrast of all the items I tried. Never tried mineral oil (and wont) so not sure how it works. To be honest, it was so long ago when I tried the olive oil I wouldnt have even known the acidity was a problem.
