1620 Coin : it is called "the billion"

Hi guys

Did a little hunt today and found a tiny little coin from 1620.

Didn't had time to clean it yet, but it's a pleasure for the eyes.

Just did a quick cleaning to be able to ID the the coin

The coin was found near a river on an actual Vineyard. The place is know since -1200BC to be a place to camp for pilgrimage. We found a lot of potteries, coins from all ages witnesses of man activities and exchanges.

It is made of Billon which is an alloy made of Silver, mercury and copper.

Just a bit of background....the billion coins were debased silver and they were making them even during the later part of the Roman Empire.

What goes around comes around....lol....basically an early version of the clad junk coins being put out today....still a neat find given the age.

Hi Bill!

Those coins are "recent" in a sense (I know seen from North America they are very old) and not "are" for certain detectorist.

Now to find them in good shape IS rare, most of them looks like the one sitting next to the small one on the picture, found in the same Vineyard.

The coin was found in a BIO Vineyard, this is probably why the coin is still in good shape (on one side at least, have to wait to see the other side) because the massive uses of industrial fertilizers in the 1960's / 1970's have "killed" all the coins.

Can you explain what type of pilgrim was camping in the Bronze Age & what site they were visiting? I may learn something here.

Great shape the coin is still showing crisp details.

Bill I think that in 400 yrs for today's coinage there isn't going to be anything of them left to dig.

It's a place where there has always been a procession every 7 or 10 years depending of the moon position since 1200BC. During the middle age the Knights Templar where very active in the area and especially in this village because of this procession and belief.


My primary concern is to find various objects from the Knights Templar....

The ritual activity of the Bronze Age, is not normally used in the same sentence as Pilgrims. Pilgrims are mostly associated with Saints. Although they gathered in large groups to celebrate the various sun & moon alignments, no-one is sure what they did other than feast. (& offer up ritual deposits)
