Got out for a river hunt with my buddy Andy. We sampled a few sites with not much to show then we hit the site we intended to go to. The site is loaded with iron and ballast stone and being that I'm relatively new to river hunting, target recovery time was a little too long for my liking. We did manage a couple of coins, some lead and buckle frags but the best thing of all was the learning factor. We've really learned that river bottoms vary tremendously, some you shouldn't bother with and others require the proper tools.
I found a 1620s Skilling (thanks to Bramblefind for the ID) and Andy found a 1690s William III farthing. Thanks for looking!

can't even begin to imagine finding those, congrats

1620s? Awesome. You can't go back much further than that date.

Dang that's old. Nice!

Congratulations on some great finds. Awesome to find something that old.

Nice finds! I love finding buckles.

Getting a hammered silver on this side of the pond-very nicely done.

Wow you guys really found the oldies congrats

Say what? Hammered silver?

Very well done sir. That is an exceptional find, congrats.

Killer hunt Joey! That skilling is absolutely awesome. So when you actually get the hang of water hunting everyone better look out! Lol.

Cheers

Glad you guys were finally able to score a couple early coins. That skilling is really cool although it appears some of the local marine life has been chewing on it for a while :laughing7:. Looks like all the hours you've been putting in are finally starting to pay off. I'm sure you'll be hitting that site again soon so good luck.

I hope so Steve-o. I was starting to lose hope but this should give me a little more motivation to keep at it.

Yeah, I was lucky someone could ID it since it's in rough shape. Now that this may be a good spot it's time for you to come try it. I'll take you under my wing and show you how a professional does it [emoji13]

The first slaves were brought over by the Dutch in 1619. They traversed these waterways and that Skilling may have been from one of those Dutch merchant ships.

Just the shot in the arm you needed! Or maybe it spoiled you?! Lol.

This hobby is pretty trying on the emotions really. Especially when beginning . I remember when I first started I found a liberty cap, and several other largies, then hit a wicked dry spell. I almost just set my detector down one day in a quiet park, and walked away. Yikes!

Killer finds again bud

You're right, I feel like I'm starting all over again by hunting in the rivers. Kind of exciting actually!

Looks like a memorable day to me. That's the stuff I hope to find. Super!

Damn buddy I'd hunt the hell out of that spot. You sure you should invite Bill? Might be a Lord B in there lol

So promising, and what a sweet little variety of finds. That skilling is RAD!

Good luck with the new approach, glad you're having fun out there.
