Some of you may remember my original post of 2 counterfeit 1879 Morgan dollars from a couple of years ago. Since than I’ve found 12 more in the same spot. My dad, nephew and my detecting partner have each found one also. I also found a counterfeit 1923 peace dollar. They are not the correct weight and most of them come out bent and beat up. They were all found in about 3 feet of water in the local lake. I found 2 more tonight. Almost every time I go back I find another one. It’s very strange. Wish we knew the story. Very interesting andawesome recoveries.

that would not good lol

Maybe they got THROWN IN THE LAKE by the counterfeiter cuz he knew they wouldn’t pass muster? What an incredible find, perhaps they have novelty value? I don’t know the legalities but I suppose if they were marked “copy” or something they would be legal to own? No matter what, that’s a VERY rare find, and it seems that the count just keeps increasing!

I would love to know that story. So interesting. I found a period 1875 Seated counterfeit dime at at a Jesuit Priest’s house from the 1850’s. I love it.

Wow! Are the Morgans all the same date, i.e. cast from the same mold?

Thats quite a collection of counterfeits. Those are really nice, even though they are not real.

if its silver even better for you go get some more

There are a variety of old date Counterfeit Silver Dollars being sold out of Chinatown in NYC. Capped Bust, Seated, and Morgans. They sell for $3. and the street hustlers put them in coin folders and sell them to unsuspecting tourists for $15 and up.
A few of the guys I worked with thought they were getting a real deal and bought a few. Put a magnet to those babies and you'll know right away.

I purchased some of these in the Ghan at the BAF and KAF bazaars for 3 bucks each, then later found some in Kabul at the gun store for 2 bucks each. I asked the man in the shop where they make them and he said that he thinks the aluminium ones are made right there in Kabul at the counterfeit gun factory. He said he did not know for sure, but since it was aluminium he would think they are from there because that is what they make all those messed up guns from too. He said that the other ones made of other metals like brass, copper or steel comes from India.

What a cool find! I wish we knew the back story on how they got there.

Very interesting find, thanks for sharing! :occasion14:

If these are "period" fakes , from the era when Peace and Morgan dollars were circulating - this becomes a more interesting story . How off are the weights ? Have you been able to identify the alloy ?

They all weigh about 19 grams when the real weight is 26. I believe they are old judging by the other items found in the area. The area was the location of taboggan slides and beach houses through the 30’s. I’m not sure what they are made of but it is a silver metal. But not silver

I wonder if they were used to cheat at a slot machine?

Congrats on such an interesting haul and for not being taken in by them. One of the more interesting collection of finds I've seen to date - thanks for sharing! :icon_thumleft:
