I stopped a bank in Ohio yesterday. I do not ask for halves first. I usually prime the pump by asking for 3 or 4 dollars in pennies. After they give me the cents I then ask for any halve dollars, "either loose, in rolls or perhaps from the vault." It is amazing how often tellers do not remember that they have a few rolls in their box or that there are some in the vault. It is nice to remind them.
This time I asked for $4 in pennies and she gave the the rolls and a $1 dollar bill. It was a silver certificate. I asked if she had more and she said yes, and lady brought them in earlier. I asked if she had brought in any coins the teller said, "No, just the dollars". I gave her $16 more dollars, asked if she had any halves (No halves). And made my way home.
