I have been metal detecting for a year now, and have never found a coin before 1904, until now. I was metal detecting where there was once a farm field in the 1700's through the 1950's. I was Metal Detecting in a new area of those woods, and I got a solid 81-85 on my metal detector. I dug down 8'' and sitting outside of the hole was a big copper coin. I got it home and cleaned it up. I saw the date 1723! I have never found a large copper, let alone a King George I. The coin is a type two (Possibly 1723 over 1722), Wood's Hibernia Half Penny.
These coins were unpopular in Ireland, so they sent them to the colonies, so they are considered Colonial American Coins, and are in the US coin Red Book.

Hey coinman123!! WOW!! CONGRATS!! REALLY NICE FIND!! THANKS FOR SHARING!! Anyway, GOOD LUCK and GOOD HUNTING!! VERDE!!

Congrats on a great find! And for skipping right past the 1800's! We don't even have coins that old on the West coast ! Unless a really rare one maybe given to the natives by some passing ship trading in the 1700'state so I suppose it's "possible". Very nice find, I bet you were ecstatic!

Coinman that's a very cool find! I remember last fall pulling my first 1700s coin a couple months into detecting and that great feeling you get. I never dreamed it would happen so fast and honestly didn't know if I'd ever find one in my life. Looks like you and I are both chasing the 1600s coins now buddy :-) hope you find one soon

awesome old coin!!

I think I will go back there tomorrow, If I go back I will let you know what I find.

congrats!! I hope there are plenty more out there with your name on them :-)

Awesome copper! Thanks for sharing!

Congrats on the Woods, Nice Coppa for sure

Sweet find! 1723 is my oldest coin as well. Found it my first year detecting. It may take a while for us both to beat that one, good luck!

That's a great coin to start the colonial collection with!

the Hibernia i found was also a 1723 - did they ship a lot of them over here(?) - you wouldn't happen to be in Mass would you(?)

Nice coin ....1700s is very nice....

GL on getting your 1600s !!

Thanks for looking,

Congrats on your first Colonial copper! I have dug hundreds of them, but I have never dug a Woods Hibernia!

I found another colonial copper, A King George II that is barely identifiable due to farm chemicals (I could not get the date)!

You definitely busted the 1800 barrier with a bang. Hope you can break into the 1600s soon. Good luck!
