Well, I got out this past weekend, which is unusual for me this time of year, and I paid the price. After fighting my way through the heavy underbrush for a while at a site I haven't visited for several years, I dug a small musket ball and was promptly stung on each arm by a hornet. (Reason number 1 that I wait until the end of October.) I quickly got out of Dodge, but I wasn't going to let some hornet stings and swollen forearms stop me from detecting on a beautiful Sunday morning!

I returned to the colonial homestead that I've been detecting every steadily for two years on the weekends - in season, to find that it was even more overgrown than the first site (reason number 2 that I wait for the end of October). It was so overgrown that really couldn't get my bearings from where I've detected in the past, so I just found some ground where it was possible to swing a coil.

I dug a few more buttons, realizing that the ground is like concrete this time of year (reason number 3 that I wait for the end of October), and after a while got a very broken iron signal that jumped occasionally into the copper range, that read 12-13 inches deep on the T2. After digging down about 13 inches there was nothing in the hole, but I was able to pinpoint a signal at the bottom. I got out my Lesche to dig a plug another 2 or three inches down, and out of the ground popped (literally) a Wm III halfpenny. Another deep, broken signal a short time later turned out to be a KG II, a few feet from an early saddle shield..

As I was getting ready to wrap it up, I got a fairly shallow zinc penny range signal that turned out to be a beauty of a Spanish silver, my fourth 1/2 reale from the site! All 4 are non-holed, which I find to be unusual.

Many of the buttons I found match other's that I've dug previously from the site including a HUGE 50 mm tombac button.

Oddly enough I didn't find any ticks (reason number 4 that I wait for the end of October), but I did get some poison ivy on my arms (reason number 5 that I wait for the end of October).

Awesome old coin shooting! :occasion14:

Neat finds. Probably worth a few stings!....The yellow jackets are getting all riled up this time of year.

Quite a battle with great results- Congrats, stings and all!!

Excellent finds - congrats !

Super!!! Congrats!!!

I would get stung for those finds as well! haha

Congratulations on the coins. Sounds like you could use a brush cutter! Nice shape on the silver. Here in East Jersey I haven't seen a tick for a few months. Where did they go?:idea1::idea1::idea1:

You were well rewarded for your efforts! :icon_thumright:

Fantastic finds—all of which are reasons NOT to wait ;)
