1781 KGIII HIBERNIA.......CLEANED UP PIC'S!!

Made it out to the field's again yesterday at the house. With the find's of the usual button's and a 1917 wheaty I took a break for about an hour or so.Got back to my spot and got a solid 79 on the MXT,after the second shovel full I saw in the hole (on edge!!) a beautiful green disc staring back.Unfortunately my shovel slid down the side of the coin. This is my first Hibernia ever. Are these alway's stamped kind of offset?I'll get it cleaned up and let you see how it turned out.Thank's for looking :icon_thumright:

Congrats on your first Hibernia and IP is so correct on it being a crude counterfeit, 1781 is a one of the most common dates used for the counterfeiting of the Hibernias.

One of my most beautiful old coppers I have found is a 1781 Hibernia, at least on the Obverse side. Besides being super thin, mine used the letter punch G (GEORGIUS) to make an O....
Evidently the counterfeiter either did not have the letter O punch or he misstruck the G and than "filled" the G in to make an O.

One of the reasons why the counterfeit colonials are collected, for the differences which collectors look for.

Thank's Don.Would you clean it up and if so would you use the peroxide method?

Most likely yes, with a little brushing or rubbing to remove the dirt, but when you take it out just lay to dry and don't rinse it, and a lot of the green color should remain. For the record I never heat it, so can't comment on if that has any different effect.

Didn't expect much for a counterfeit coin but here it is.Two peroxide bath's later.....Look's like a double strike(crease on the edge) and the letter "E"on the obverse. She's done :icon_thumright:

Is it me or just the photo or did it look better before the cleaning? I know a couple of older coins I found ended up worse after I tried cleaning them. It's still a great find and worthy of a coin holder in my book!

It's still a pretty neat find. Now you need to go back and find another one :icon_thumleft:
