1787 New Jersey Copper...1st 1700's coin!!!

Well I do not post much on here, been visiting the site and checking out everyone's cool finds for about a year or so. Well I have been hunting this small town square for about a week now. I have pulled quite a few keepers. Today was no different, I started by getting a 3 "V" Nickel and wheat penny spill. Soon after I get this copper disk. I seen it was too big for a LC, but I couldn't see anything on it. So I kept going and got the merc, which I destroyed with my digger.

After I started driving home I looked at the copper disk again and I could see the shield outline. I knew it was a New Jersey copper. It was hard for me to drive home I was so nervous to get home and check it out.

After cleaning it lightly with a toothbrush and water I can't make out a date. Is there anyone that can tell by the shield design what year this could possibly be? I would appreciate it.

By the way this was found in Ohio. This is my first 1700s coin and would love if one of you colonial guru's can pin a date on this!!

I am sure that Don will be on this one in no time...NW Ohio! Awesome find from way out there. I doubt many many made it out that far!

If you can, take a picture indoors holding a light from a side angle. Might show a little more details so the experts can ID it better for you. Great finds.

Good Idea, The back looks a lot better with the light on the side but the front is toast.

Re: New Jersey Copper..need help!!

Congrats on getting a NJ copper! From what I see initially it might be a 1787 Maris 6-D, which is a Very Common variety. If you could measure it in mm that might help narrow it down, since 6-Ds are on large planchets. I will look closer shortly, lunch time :) but if I think that is it I will either say yay or correct this initial attritubtion.
Sending you a PM.

It measures between 28 and 29 mm. Closer to 29

Re: New Jersey Copper..need help!!

I compared with my Maris 6-D, which is in somewhat similar condition, the wear pattern is even about the same, but, with it being a Large Planchet, and the fact the right upper point of the shield alignment with the letter S is correct and the location of the lower right star and letter M are aligned correctly I see no other variety that it could be. It seems like a 99.9% is a match for a 1787 Maris 6-D. (Confirmed ID by a very knowledgeable NJ collector)

The one thing I would have liked to easily see is the die crack, which I am not sure if that was only present in later die states, but my example has it, so does the one on Coinfacts, but it might be there, only lighter (bottom point of the shield going to the left from there).

Thanks Don, I'm thrilled to have it. There is a die crack, but very faint underneath and left of the Shield. Had to move the light around quite a bit to see it!!

Re: New Jersey Copper..need help!!

Amazing find. Hard to believe that there have been now 2 1700's coins from Ohio in the past few weeks. Congrats on a great find.

Not sure what part of the state the others in my survey are located,(know the county found in, just not where they are in the state off the top of my head.) but only two NJ coppers prior to this one have been reported found to me from Ohio. I am sure many more have been found, but just not posted that I have seen on any of the forums.

Re: 1787 New Jersey Copper...1st 1700's coin!!!

Congrats on finding a coin that is rather rare for Ohio! I'm sure these circulated into the 1820s, plus with all the War of 1812 activity in NW Ohio, there may be some more to be found. Get into some of those War of 1812 camps, or one of Mad Anthony Wayne's camps from his 1794 campaign, and who knows what cool early coins you might find :dontknow:

Re: 1787 New Jersey Copper...1st 1700's coin!!!

great find Kyle, glad you joined the 1700s club, that is a HARD club to get into living in Ohio!!!! So odd you were with me when I dug my 1773 Virginian half penny, wish I had been there with you for this one! AWESOME!

Re: 1787 New Jersey Copper...1st 1700's coin!!!

Congrats on reaching the 1700's and for finding a state copper! :headbang:
