Found my best large copper ever....a 1798 Draped Bust Large Cent (type 2). I was very lucky that it was in such great condition. The V nickle is the first I have been able to pull a date from. The 1898 Barber dime is the first "O" mint mark I have on any coin to date. Thanks, and HH!

Wow, you couldn't ask for a better clean up! Don't we wish they all turned out that way?

Congrats on a 1700's US copper.

Hey thanks for that suggestion! I'll try it.

If you soak the coin in Extra Virgin Olive Oil for a few more weeks to a month, it should loosen quite a bit more, if not all of the gunk, grime and encrustation on the coin. Once removed and still wet, remove the gunk, grime and encrustation with a sharp green Rose Thorn. The Rose Thorn will not damage the Copper planchet or any of the details or lettering on the coin. Once you feel that you have removed all of the gunk, grime and encrustation from the coin that can be removed, just rinse it well with water, pat dry between the folds of a soft towel, then let air dry for awhile and then place it in a 2x2 coin protector. The slight amount of Extra Virgin Olive Oil that is somewhat penetrated the metal and what remains on the surface, will protect the coin's metal from further damage.

I would do nothing more than wet soft brush that cent, it is certainly an awesome dig for you. Great great great !!!!

Never go wrong finding old LCs, especially capped bust, draped, caped liberty or flowing hair. Was trying to figure out which variety you have. One of two or three identified in my red book. What does the fraction read on the reverse? It's not too clear in the pic.

Wow that Draped Bust cleaned up great! Really nice silver, and Indians! Congratulations

S-174....common. Don could probably confirm this. You can see part of the head impression from the obverse running through the ribbon on the left side reverse. Also the only date spacing that matches.
This is the variety.

Dang your good at nailing the Varieties! I did not notice the Die Clashing due to all of the corrosion and encrustation on the Reverse and the Date digit spacing was really giving me fits. I sometimes wish that I had all of the reference books on early U.S. coins and Varieties but I can't afford them or justify their cost! While there is a lot of information and pics online, it is sometimes hard to go back and forth from one browser tab to the other to try to match a Variety. If I had the room in my' office or bedroom, I would link two or three displays to one of my' PC's which would help. Thanks not only for the O.P. but for me as well as I was stumped! I love attributing Varieties but some of the early U.S. coins can really be a challenge!

A little bit of everything, can't beat that. Nice LC and silver.

Thanks Frank. Took me about 1/2 hour. Easier when they come out nicer, but this one had enough detail. I mostly go to Breens, coinfacts, and there is a guy that has an extensive large cent collection online. I just minimize the posters coin and go back and forth with the other websites and books. It can get aggravating sometimes though. I don't even try 1787 Conn.s......Just too many.

WOW!!! Outstanding finds. Love that large cent. Those barbers would work as well!!!!! Job well done!!!:occasion14:

I always love to see those Draped Bust coppers dug and posted.... you found a nice one. Congrats!

Just realized I forgot to add the pics of the V nickle...here they are.
