Yesterday Dan, Jim, and I went back to the 1600s site where we had found 7 coins from the 1600s and 1 dated 1720. We didnt find anymore coins but we did get some neat relics. Dan posted his and I am going to post mine as well as 2 from Jim. We left after targets became many minutes apart.
After 2pm and a drink we headed on to another 1600s site where Jim had hunted before. I got 1 nipple type decorated button as well as another tombac button. Then my best find of the day...a super small complete buckle. Dan found a 1675 farthing (Jim found another one of these on the site last season). We left that site a 5pm with meager but nice finds.
In all it was a great day for finds. Below is a picture of my favorites. All but a few came off the spectacular site that produced the 3 Spanish cobs. i havent had the chance to hunt much this year. I am thankful we were able to get a site like this to make up for it.
1. Jims remarkably preserved decoration, possibly off a piece of furniture
Notice the 5 Tudor roses (it looks like thats what they are anyway) Came from just inside the woods...as far as I am concerned this is the best find of the site, even better than a cob in my book.
2. Jims leather strap decoration made of tobac
Has two prongs on the reverse for folding over a leather strap for attachment. This is also one of my favorites.
3. A view of "my take" from the site. All but just a few pieces is from just the one grand site...
4. Close up of a piece of clay tobacco pipe with GLASGOW molded into it. I found this along the creek while we were still searching for a detecting site. I suspect it is from a later period but its a cool find...
5. 2 more leather strap decorations like #2 above but not nearly as interesting...BUT OLD! They both have the double prongs in tact on the back side. Want to see them? Let me know...
6. My favorite find of the day...A SMALL KICK BUTT 17th CENTURY BUCKLE!
7. Maybe a gun flint. I found it while digging up a target. Its definitely hand made.
8. Two days of buckles. I just realized I found the other half of one of them yesterday...I like it!
9. 4 nipple buttons. I have never found one ever and we found 8 or 9 of them on one site. I got 4! The more detailed one from the 2nd 1600s site.
10. One side of the 2 coins I got last week. 1695 and 1681.
11. Flip side of the coins. The halfpenny is "date in legend" not "date in exergue". Catalog shows this only for 1698 and 1699 but the date really seems to be 1695. Look at it. I tilted the coin to the left by 90 degrees so the date is now at 12 o' clock.
12. A sideways view of my loot. Notice the crude hook latch.
