I searched the areas around a cellar hole dating from at least the 1850s. I found an 1830 large cent there earlier this year. The latest finds include this interesting ring (at at least I am pretty sure it is a ring). I thought nothing of it when I dug it, as it was crusted in dirt and looked like some sort of fitting. It appears to be thin copper with some ornate gold gilding on it. I am guessing it is from the early to mid 1800s, as most of the buttons and the two coins I have found there previously were from that period. If anyone has any insights about this ring or its age, I would love to hear them. As for the buttons, one is a Wellington commemorative back button from around 1815-1816. It celebrates Duke Wellington‘s victory over Napoleon at Waterloo. One of the other buttons still has threads, while one is concave with a nice floral design on it. Also found a shoe buckle frame, I believe, and most of a very old style crotal bell. Nice to be digging again. Good luck and happy hunting.

That ring is absolutely cool! Even if it's not a ring it's still a great conversation piece....

Really nice finds! Does the ring fit? Re-gild and wear it possibly.
Thanks! It fits my pinky finger, but that’s it. Nice idea, but I think I will save it for a display box. I have never found a ring quite like this one, so I am pretty happy with it.

I would say the ring is of the Art Nouveau style of 1880s-1910 period.

Thanks for your opinion. It does have an artsy look to it, and you know your stuff better than I do. I still like to think it is a bit older than that though, as I have not found anything else that is definitely from that later period at that site. I believe the house was gone by 1890 too, but I am not sure and that may not be entirely relevant.. Regardless of age, it is one of my favorite ring finds despite the base metal and rough condition. Thanks again.
