Was looking over my hoard again, and found this curiosity. Said to be 1806, Colonial Copper, probably found by a detectorist in the Northeast US.

Writing on the bust side (obverse?) states GEORGIUS III D.G. REX, and 1806 at the bottom. On the other side (reverse?) is BRITANNIA. I'll bet the photos are better than my description. Coin is larger than a US quarter, so over 24.3mm wide, but less than a US half dollar, which has a diameter of 30.6mm. My Latin is worse than my English, but I think this translates to: "George III, by the Grace of God King, 1806", (or is that ... by God's Grace"?) and Britannia or "Great Britain". Don't see any denomination, so my best guess is an English coin still in circulation in 1806 in America, when coinage was quite hard to get.

It is a British Halfpenny from the SOHO mint, to get a decent history google SOHO mint coinage. I have found both the British Halfpenny 1806 and 1807 and two 1805 Irish Halfpence all from the SOHO mint, they have an engrailed edge, (a grove cut into the edge around the coin) with oblique milling within the engrailing. My 1806 and 1807 British ones are 28.6mm in diameter.

Thanks, Don! That certainly seems to fit. 29mm diameter? Well ... maybe. Didn't think it was that close to a half dollar in diameter: would only be 1mm away from it.

Odd what you find cached away.
