hey all...we got out to hunt in N.E. today. My 1st find of the day was the D.P.W. telling me i cant dig in the local common or any parks at all.sadly i went home and told my wife jackie and she replied,,,who cares lets dig in the backyard.so reluctantly we went out back yet again. We found a lil iron alot of aluminum and trash,Suddenly i got a strong quarter signal near a group of rocks in the middle of the yard.i easily popped it up 1st shot and could only see a tiny bit of it,,looked like a quarter or game token..i yelled for jackie and she agreed ...its a game token...But it wasnt at all.It said ONE CENT right in the middle of it.after reading the preservation and cleaning forum here at Tnet i started with soap and water a toothbrush and then the peroxide method.I can see 100% of the details when its wet but when it dries i cant really make out the front very good.seems to need a lil moisturizer or something.ill work on a better picture too.any info would be appreciated...It's a 1817 LC coppa with 13 stars and a beaut!

Congrats! Great find.

Scrapdoggie thats a beaut of a coin. I have yet to find a large cent or anything else for that matter that old. You have stepped up to a new realm of detectin. To heck with those parks there's plenty of other places to hunt. My favorite way to get great old sites to hunt is find the local hangout where all the old kaugers have breakfast an begin socializing soon you'll have tons of places to go. :coffee2:

Thans for all your replys
heres the other stuff too...draft beer handle i think...kool old lighter any info would be appreciated and an old Avon makeup thing made of copper too i think cuz its all green inside also

Here is the quick answet to better pictures. Outdoor lighting or a well lit room is best. Use smallest picture size setting. Set to MACRO (Tulip icon). Put camera on tripod. Turn OFF flash. set self timer. Focus. Shoot. Crop using MS office Picture Manager or any other image editing tool. GOOD LUCK!

Great find, BTW!

Congrats!!

Some oil from your fingers on the high points of the coin should bring out the detail more. I sometimes have to do this after the peroxide.

I can't wait to see this coin! Oldest copper coin I got last year was 1818. Nice work!

P.S.--taking the time to dig up and clean out the trash in your yard is a good idea. It'll take some time, but there are other goodies waiting for you. Aluminum will mask the brass items and old nickels--perhaps even a half dime. The Large Cent is your clue that you should take the time to do this. When you are able to find flat buttons and old lead--especially tombacs, you'll know you've gotten to the right level in terms of trash removal.

Congrats on your first large coppa!! They are a thrill to find aren't they?

Only you out-easters can dig LC's in your own yard! Hate'cha!

Great find, beats my best by 40 years. I like the relics, too. I think you'd better hit your yard hard, it's a winner!

That beer tap knob should be worth a few bucks too especially if it cleans up well. The insert should be porcelain.
