1822 large cent, a few bullets and one "what's it?"...

Rained all afternoon, good thing I'm used to being all wet. :laughing7: I managed one large cent and a few sinkers and bullets. The little hatchet was also welcomed. I don't know how old it is, but it will display nicely one day. Any ideas on the "snow bird" looking thingy? It's made out of lead and weighs several pounds. Seems like I should know this one. I had actually found it on a previous trip and left it. Don't know why. I think it pretty cool looking now. Thanks for checking this out!

Looks to be off a boat maybe? Love the bullet finds, any rare ones? I thought the first scabbard tip I ever found was off a german helmet and threw it down, LOL

My worst throw away mistake that I realized was a Volcanic self propelled bullet. I'm still berating myself over that and it was 20 years ago. :tongue3: The best bullet out of this batch was a dropped .58 Enfield.

Thanks man... There doesn't appear to be any on the feet or elsewhere. There is a thumb screw that passes through the eye of the "bird". I'll clean it up and get better pictures tomorrow.

You are making some great finds in my old stomping grounds! I grew up in Hagerstown, Md. My worst throw away was made here in Albany, Ga. some years back. I found several "sardine" tins at a Yankee occupation site and threw them away. My brother came down one year and I took him to the site where he found one and told me they were period ration tins! I asked him how he knew this and he pointed to the lead solder used to put them together.

I feel your pain with the throw-aways... I lived in Hagersbush a few years myself. Still pretty close!

and peanut... gotta hit the site one more time on Saturday, and then I'll post it up. I hope I didn't oversell it. :-[

I think your item may actually be made of zinc - It looks like a crowsfoot sacrificial anode, used to prevent corrosion of metal hulls on ships/boat. It would be bolted or clamped to the metal hull.

Update: actually it looks more like a crowsfoot zinc, which would have been part of an old battery. Zinc is used for sacrificial anodes, but I don't see any in that shape.

I was getting ready to move this over to the "What is it?" forum, but you already nailed it. Thanks! It's part of a "crow's foot battery" used in the 1800's to power telegraphs. My wife already called dibs on it. Sweet!

Thank BMike.. Here is one producing electricity. Picture's kinda small, sorry.

And romeo-1... I have to hit the site one more time on Saturday, then I'll post it up. I do apologize for mentioning it earlier, but I was so psyched just after I found the lance that I violated protocol and my own good sense. I won't do it again...promise.
