And some other goodies. Short story. Grandfather passed when I was 14. I'm 31 now. Yesterday was my mother's b day so my grandmother pulls a box out of the attic and says give this to your mom it's some of her father's things. This is what she pulls out. Thoughts on grading and values. This is a odd 1 oz silver bar too.and there are a lot of foreign coins with similar dates.

Wow - that 1830 is in really nice shape. You have some nice family history there, makes you wonder how many of your ancestors handed them down throughout the years.

You may want to do a little research on the bar. I've been seeing news articles about some of the silver bars now being quite collectible and bringing more then spot prices.

Unfortunately not but can tell you it is just as clean as the front. The letters on the rim are also visible. I'll see if I can get him to send me one

I know why you wanna see a pic of the back. I did some more research about the large c on the back. I do remember yesterday saying it could be fake because the c didn't look right. I will have clean pics up at about 6:3pm est

The 1830 looks like the more common small letters version though if I'm wrong it is worth some dough. Still worth at least a couple hundred as it looks original. Nice coin.

Nice 1830 Half Dollar! I was hoping that it was the rare "Large Letters" Variety but sadly it is not. While the "E" in STATES lines up about right (i.e. the left side of the bottom horizontal bar of the "E" just past the center or about 1/4 of the way from the left) with the space between "B" and "U" in PLURIBUS, the "P" in PLURIBUS is not far enough to the right in respect to the first "S" in STATES. Also, there is a way to tell by the 50C but I always have trouble with this due to wear, damage, over-polished Dies as well as differences in the Dies. See the pic below.

Very helpful. From my understanding they have 3 different varieties of this year. Large letters, large 0, and small letters. Does this not at the very least look like the 0 in 1930 is a little large. And what do you think this coin grades

I'd say between a 40 and 45 from photo but in hand there are always suprises. Any rim dings or reverse shield issues can't be seen from photo. Nice coin that looks like it would likely grade from a TPG.

I am pretty sure it is a "Large 0 (that is a zero)" Variety and I agree that the coin will likely grade at EF-40. If the Reverse was as good as the Obverse, then it would probably get an AU-50 grade. While there are 3 main Variety categories, out of those, there are a total of 23 Varieties for the 1830 Capped Bust Half Dollar.

Tom, The BEST way to find out prices on any numismatic material is to go to a B&Mortar coin shop(for advice) and buy an up to date copy of Coin World magazine(May2015-6.00) and bear in mind these are only "ballpark" figures! If you have a piece that's some offbeat"die-combo" it can go a lot higher at auction when collectors fight over it. This applies to all who want to get the max out of any/all sales.
