DAY 1
I went back to the middle school and spent 5.5 hours swinging the CZ21 gridding 2 sections that were pretty dead. You never know when the goodies will pop up so you have to cover it all. Sometimes you are lucky and sometimes you aren’t. This is one of the unlucky ones. I found 27 coins with a face value of $0.91, a broken swivel snap, a clock gear, a zipper pull, 2 cut pieces of commercial fasteners, a little foil and can slaw, 38 tabs and 11 pencil ends. Overall a very poor hunt, but at least I was out swingin and you won’t find it if you don’t go.
DAY 2
I went to the K to 8 school to do more grids hoping to get lucky. I worked 2 grids, one that was very quiet and one that had a lot of iron. I spent 5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 7 coins with a face value of $0.44, 2 wheaties, part of a lantern, a small buckle, part of an earring, a bell, a bracelet, some copper wire, an aluminum bottle cap, can slaw, aluminum cans, construction aluminum, some big iron pieces, 8 tabs and 7 pencil ends.
The goodies were very sparse. In the first grid I only found 2 coins and a few assorted pieces of metal. It was very quiet. The second grid was iron heavy and I did dig up some of the bigger pieces in case they masked a better find. All the better pieces came from the second grid. The lantern piece is from a ROYAL kerosene lamp. It is the top cap part and has several patent dates. The oldest is 1888. I found several ROYAL lamps for sale on line that look like this piece matches.
The croatal bell is a nice medium sized one and is complete. It is not marked in any way so no way to tell the maker or age. I haven’t found one in a long time so a nice surprise.
The bracelet is copper and has a nice design. This area had lots of rocks and iron and the bracelet was down in a rock pile so I’m not sure if it was bent by the rocks or by my recovery. The closure is rather unusual and it has been damaged by the acid soil. A nice find anyway.
DAY 3
I went to a set of playing fields I haven’t been to for over a year. I went hoping for new losses and maybe a goodie I missed. I found a bust dime in this small park last time I went. I spent 4.5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 53 coins with a face value of $4.27, a wheatie, a key, 2 pieces of toy cars, 2 odd pieces, a plastic Frankenstein ring (on the surface), aluminum bottle caps, foil, can slaw, whole aluminum cans (deep) and 10 tabs.
The wheatie was the best find, a 1942 D in decent shape for our acid soil. The bent key looks like a commercial lock and says DUPLICATION PROHIBITED.
NON DETECTOR FINDS
I spotted a flock of turkeys moving through my backyard a couple of days before Thanksgiving. I guess they were heading for the hills so they didn’t end up on a plate.
Finds are thinning out in my usual a spots so I need to branch out. The croatal bell and bracelet helped make this a decent week. The weather is cooling off, down to 19 this morning, and we had a little snow yesterday with more predicted tomorrow so it might be a while before I get out again.
