It's been a while since I've posted last, haven't been hunting much this summer and I've done alright when I go but nothing more than a couple mercury dimes. Well yesterday my luck changed around!! I was taking a walk with my wife on a beach that use to have a town in the mod 1800's ( just got married one month ago today) we like to look for sea glass together since she isn't into metal detecting herself. We were finding plenty of old sea glass and pottery when I noticed an area that had lots of brick, concrete, and rust! I walked over and started scanning the dunes edge for anything that might catch my eye. Suddenly I noticed half of a large copper coin sticking out of the sand!!! I called my wife over to come see before I plucked it out of the sand (I didn't have my phone to take a picture) next thing I knew, I was holding the oldest coin I've ever found! And I didn't even have my detector! A beautiful 1830 large cent!!

I couldn't stop thinking all night about getting back out there with my detector!! So that's exactly what I did this morning and I'm sure glad I did! I headed right for the spot I found the LC and after a couple digs I found two really nice flat buttons in the same hole! I started to get excited! A little farther away and only about two feet from yesterday's LC I got a loud crisp 83 on my dfx! There it was! Another large cent! I saw that the bust was facing right and I knew it had to be older than the first one! But I couldn't see much detail right away so I threw it in my pocket and kept hunting that spot with out finding much. The suspense was killing me, I had to get a closer look at that LC! I took it out of my pocket and noticed a date! I just broke into "the 1700's club" with a 1797 draped bust large cent!!!

If I remember right, this is one of the more rare dates to find?

I continued down the beach farther and ended up finding some old copper rivets and copper square nails.

Also found a real cool bottle and some broken glass.

Large cent surface find and not in a plowed field. That's pretty cool. I have yet to break into the 1700's with a US minted coin. Lots of KG's and a Spanish cob Breaking into the 1700's with a US coin is not easy. Good job

Really nice finds
Congratulations on becoming a "1700's Club Member "

Outstanding finds!!! I wish I was still on the Cape.... and congrats on your wedding!

Thanks guys! I never really thought of how rare a 1700s US coin is! The wedding was perfect as well! Here's me and my bride.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1441163859.588156.webp

I'm pretty sure the 1797 is the 97' reverse with no stems which is the rarer more valuable version!

Great finds. Congrats on a 1700's US coin!
