What started out as a nice Sunny weekend turned out to be one filled with many surprises. First was some of the strange thunderstorms and winds that occurred on Friday with a minor Tornado touching down and causing some damage to one of the local towns . Then what happened on Saturday made this weekend better. I decided to head to the 2 Old Cellar hole site that I found last year and try out a new 15 inch coil that I had purchased from a friend of mine John at Reliatech Metal Detectors here in New York. This site has given up plenty of excellent finds over the last year and a half , which I have mentioned in my earlier post on the 2 Old Cellar holes.

So that Saturday morning I headed out to that site with a friend of mine and as we arrived I started in an area that has given up some nice finds that were found very deep , so now after a short while and finding a few nice deep pieces of iron I finally get a hit that sounded kinda promising. So after digging I pulled out a leather strap rivet at 8 to 9 inches which made me happy that something was found with the new toy, so now continuing the next target was deep and bigger .. It was part of a pewter spoon that was at around 10 inches. Now with things starting to happen I was wondering what was coming next.. Sodown along the creek I went and after finding some more deep iron fragment and some what looked to be tin plate pieces I get a great hit a couple of feet away from a tree along the bank of the creek. Now I started digging and digging , and it figures a nice root to chop through so now down at least 12 inches I swing the coil and still a great hit so I keep digging and after the next shovel and about 14 inches down I see a large disk the size of a silver Dollar . Now with looking at the piece I see it's another Temperance Medal, yes I said another . This is the second one that I have found at this site . the first one was in rough shape and you could not see any words on it to really identify or date that particular piece. So with this one in such excellent condition you can see the date 1838 on the reverse and at least the time period of this find....No coin over 1844 has come out of this site , and finding 2 temperance Medals has made me wonder what went on at this very old site!

Now looking at this Temperance Medal I have noticed a very small name at the bottom of the face of this piece under the alter, It says ( Jones ). Is this the name of the individual that may have worn this Medal . Some people believed that if worn, it would bring good luck and good health . I will have to further research this and look back at the information on this site!

The other finds were also found at this site but some of the iron piece were not shown in the pics.....the small flat button was found at 8 to 9 inches also along the bank of the creek ....Thanks for reading and HH.......

WoW Seeker! Awesome that you have a date!!!!

Congrats!!!!!

;)

Nice deep find...

Very cool, early temperance item. According to the net, though the temperance movement started in the late 18th century, it didn't blossom till the early 1830s. Having found two medals on the site, you'd have to say there's a good chance it was a meeting place for Temperance Society members.

Very cool medal! Sounds like there are more goodies there to be had!

Cool indeed! I've never seen one of those before.
Thanks for posting a pic! :D

Interesting find, congrats! HH, Mike

That medal is a great find. Are you wearing it right now for good luck? It'll help keep you out of the taverns, ya know! ;D :-* ::)

I'm glad you're new coil is working out for you. Is it heavy? Harder to swing?

Your stories just keep getting better and better. :)

Great post and find, Seeker!

This medal seems to have been associated with the Temperance movement in Ireland:

"The Cork Total Abstinence Society, Father Mathew, President, had a Medal. It framed the words of the pledge in the shape of a broad cross: 'I promise to abstain from all intoxicating drinks except used medicinally and by order of a medical man and to discountenance the cause and practice of intemperance.'"

The same medal is illustrated in Cusack's The History of Cork (1875), as shown below.

Note: If the lettering "Jones" is raised, not engraved, then it's probably the name of the engraver or diesinker who created the medal.

Nice to see something come out of those holes. the coil must be the ticket because I didn't even get a good signal in 6 hours that we were there.

Thanks for all the great replys and information.....I will look at the old maps I have of that area , and I believe that the owner of the land was named Jones back in the 1840's.....Thanks again! HH Seeker
