1853 Braided Hair Cent

It's time I posted my large cent where it might stay for awhile.
I found this around 5 years ago in the town of Mazeppa,Minnesota.
It was under the grass in sandy soil 3 or 4 inches down.
It's the only large cent I ever found. It has some dings on it and
all I did to it was toothbrush,soap and water clean up. Roger

They are my under developed cucumbers.

We do find large cents like that in PA. I found an 1818 in PERFECT shape two years ago, and we found about 5 Coronet cents in that condition at the "Coronet Field" last October.

Yes you Colonial hunters do find some wonderfull coins in very good condition.I would love to find the coins you guys have but
I won't find them here in Mn.

You're right about the large cents. They are not very common around here.
Mazeppa has also been good to me over the years. I found my first seated liberty half dollar in the city park on the day my son was born. (Nov. 15, 1975) but that's another story.

That sure is a nice looking find. I don't have any that look nearly as nice.
I remember the thrill of finding my first large cent. I was using my White Eagle II and got the signal near the corner of a house built in 1840. The coin was dated 1840 and had such sharp details and I think it was dropped during the house construction. Although it looked to be in great shape when it first came out of the ground, the surface flaked off when my cousin rinsed it in the sink.

In NH we would consider that a rare find since the acidic soils in this region raise hell with the coppers. I've found older large cents, but not nicer. Great find!
I have to say, the large cent is one of my favorite coins. Maybe because it is so fragile, and to find one is a real treat.
