All Treasure Hunting
It's been raining so much in the last few weeks here in my part of Oregon. Detecting outings are scarce this time of year. So, I tend to go thift store hunting. Flea market hunting ext. I have a few special secret places I go to. That always produce goodies.
Among some other goodies I found. I came across a 1853 Seated Dime in very fine shape.
Which, at first glimpse. I thought was a Barber Dime since all I could see was the back. When I flipped it over. I about crapped myself. Because the price was so low. And it was a seated! Then, it happend. The Coin Charm..... someone....for god knows WHAT reason. Had to punch holes in. I was so disappointed to see such an excellent example of this coin ruined. My thrill of the find was quickly turned into an ache inside my stomach. I bought it anyway naturally. It cost me just about 2 dollars. And I thought I would share it anyway. Not a detecting find. But a find none the less. More than one way to treasure hunt. To bad this one had to have holes.
They DO make charms for holding coins to all you, coin hole punchers of awesome old coins. They have for years! I still have an Irish rabbit coin made into a charm from my grandpa in a neat coin charm holder made of gold.
HOLES......talk about a buzz kill........I could of scored a 40-50$ dollar coin for nothing if it had no holes!!!
Still glad I found it though. I call it my Rare 1853 tragic "O" mint double die error. And its worth millions because its the only one ever to slip into circulation.
Well. Just wanted to share. Since. Detecting has been a no go the last few weeks. can't wait to get back out there. And get a good full day of hunting.

yeah me too. I bought a half seated 1854 for a buck this year too. That had been made into a charm. No holes. But they used solder, or melted silver to make a loop at the top for a charm. And it was in pretty decent shape as well.
Hurts to see that. But. hey. I will take em. Would have paid 5 bucks for it. They are just cool to own. But, the holes.....ugh. that really stings.
Also found this ring. But, I can't tell if the gold coin is real or replica. The ring itself is gold. But the Indian Princess Gold Coin, is hard to tell. It doesn't have that bright yellow luster to it. The person is asking 100 bucks for it. And, I can't tell if its a dollar coin, or a 3. Never seen one of these coins in person.

While the holes do wreck the numismatic value , your coin is still a nice find for a couple bucks.
I'm fairly sure that the holes were punched a long time ago , from the worn appearance of the
flanges around them . I would like to see the ring with the gold? coin in a better light , can you
put up a closer pic ? - Argentium.

Re: The Ring

The $3 Gold has a diameter or 20.5mm while that style $1 has a diameter of 15mm. If just the ring is actually gold it is probably worth the $100 as it looks pretty chunky from the pic.

Can you get measurements and more photos of it, sweet looking piece. :icon_thumright:

That gold coin ring looks real to me!! have it checked out!! you stole it for $100!! wtg!! too bad on the seated but hey $2...I would buy it!!

I need to mention to you all. I have NOT bought the gold ring. I was however honest with the person about what it was. And that they needed to have it checked out. Im not sure what size gold piece it is. I assumed 1$. When it may be 3 or five. Im not an expert when it comes to those coins. But its a size 10 ring. I just can't buy a ring from someone A, the chance that its a fake. or B, that it is real. And me stealing from them. But, we shall see tomorrow. If it checks out. Hey....maybe I will still get it for the asking price.

Barter will em. Ask em to hold it, or put money down on it to hold it if you can. A lot of people are really reasonable. And a lot of small businesses are trying to stay alive. So they sell stuff at great deals.
There are neat treasures hidden everywhere. Its fun to do when you can't detect. I've found some really great stuff that is not only worth far more than what I paid monetary wise. But just historically cool. I guess they call it picking. its fun.
Hope you score your vintage pocket knife. I found a few old ones detecting. but they are destroyed. All rusted shut. Still cool looking though.

nice seated!!!! MR TUFF

Almost looks as though they might have used the Seated for a Button at some point. I think the Ring Coin is British or Canadian.

Nice homemade silver button you dug there. I've got a half dime like that. Two holes for sewing on a coat. Well done. :icon_thumleft:

The gold coin is an early Gold Coin. Its called Indian Princess - gold Dollar. It followed the first variety of the gold dollar we all know. The Liberty head And it is American. If the ring is real. I think its a type two gold 1$ in bad shape. Later dated type. As seen in the links, or picture below.

Me too. trouble is. My gut feeling is the ring is a fake. So waiting to see what they learn about it. Another will pop up. Pretty common ring type using old gold coins. Just never seen one with the Indian Princess head.
Its funny actually. They call certain coins Indians. When in fact, this coin, and the indian head cent were actually Lady Liberty in a indian head dress. The only two I know of that depict real Native people are the gold eagle, and the Buffalo nickel.
And later the sac clad dollar.
Oh speaking of which. I found a really odd coin. Its a maui trade dollar. this thing is HUGE. It is good for 2$ in trade in maui Hawaii for the year 2008. Never seen anything like it before. And it is bigger than a an old silver dollar, or ike dollar. Pretty cool. Think it must be copper/nickel as it rang up high. Also found a small sheet of Nickel. A small square sheet of it. I thought it was steel at first for some reason. Never thought about how it rang up. I tried the use my die punch to punch out a nickel size piece. And it was hard as hell. So, either nickel is a really hard metal. Or its a nickel mix. However, it reads low. ANd in the coin size I punched out. It reads just below nickel as its thickness is less. Kinda neat.

Holes or not, it's still a seated coin :icon_thumright:
