In 1856,US Sec of War Jefferson Davis was behind the formation of the US Camel Corps in the Southwest.Davis placed US Lt E F Beale in charge of the Camel Corps,a man he knew since the Mexican-American War,and incidently wrote the 1850 BEALE PAPERS,which had excerpts that were "borrowed" and used in the 1885 BEALE PAPERS as a basis for the Beale Party expedition.
