Last weekend was an 1865 Two Cent piece from this site. Now comes an 1865 Indian Head. The IH is one of my favorite coins to dig but i think this double trigger guard was my biggest thrill of the evening. I anxiously pounded the surrounding area thinking there may be more of the gun but it looks like this is all there is to it. Any gun experts out there recognize this trigger guard? Thanks for lookin!

Some nice finds for the display case there, my friend! Keep 'em coming.

I have a few trigger guard pieces, but only one anywhere close to that complete. Good stuff.

Cheers,

Buckles

Happy to help, but I can't date it.

Great find!

My thought is that guard is from a flintlock, or early percussion hunting rifle, it's really hard to date them by themselves.

Nola Ken,thanks for that pic. I've zoomed it in close and i'm pretty sure that second from the bottom rifle is a match!!cool, now if i can id the rifle... :-)

Jerry, the second from the bottom is an A. J. Plate Heavy Sporting Rifle, .52 cal, made somewhere in the 1860's. They were a California maker, so most likely not the source of your guard, but there were a lot of makers using that style.

Good old digs no doubt.............................:icon_thumleft:
