I am sad to report that my time at the secret site is drawing to a close.
I stopped by there last night for 2 hours and came away with 2 1867 shield nickels. One of them is a bit worn and still needs alot of cleaning, but the other one is in awesome condition! I dug it at about 6in and it was in clay. I think this is one of the nicest shield nickels I have dug. I also dug an 1884 indian cent that is on its last leg. I'm sad to see the ol' site go but I'm thrilled with how it has treated me!

It was a good run Johnny...but all
good things come to an end sometime.
You will find another site I'm sure and
it will produce for you as well. Congrats

Very nice nickel. Your soil is to kind to them. Ours usually are worn close to smooth.

I have never seen a nickel look that good. What did you do?

Great sites all have to end. I have one I drive by and cry over weekly--sniff. But, you ended on a great note, so you still the man!

Terry, I think this nickel condition is cause it was in clay..that helped alot in preserving

Thanks everyone for the kind words! I agree that the coin was preserved well because of the clay. I've found a few nickels and indian heads before in clay and it protects them very well!!
I might just have one more hunt in this place....we'll see what happens:) 8)

Hey Johnny, definitely give it another shot! I have gone over good spots 5 or 6 times and still found something worth keeping.

I have nothing but CLAY here and they are always rust colored and almost unreadable.

But something in the soil/dryness maybe is doing it.
