Today I had 2 hours to hunt after work before my wife and daughter got home. I decided to hunt the old homestead where I found the duo of Wheat cents this week. The finds were slow coming. I dug several plow heads, and axe head, several more cents and a clad dime. I had a hit around an older tree that IDed between a zinc cent and a copper cent. I dug this very large medal (the size of a silver dollar). I was extremely excited. :icon_thumright: I got it home and cleaned it up. It appears to be a base medal coin or medal dated 1870. It has a plain edge. The obverse states "Friedrich Wilhelm Kronprinz Preussen" the reverse has the date 1870 along with 5 raised crests or coats of arms. Under the date is another seal with cannon, cannon balls, and banners. It also states something else in German that I can't quite make out. :icon_scratch: I anyone has any information on this medal, please share. :read2:

That's a really great find!

Thanks Woodland, still looking for something similar online, but haven't found it yet...

WOW!!! My-T-Fine!! I can imagine that you are as accurate with that detector as you are with that M-4!! :notworthy:

Hey Bank Runner,
Nice medal, congrats on finding it. :icon_thumleft:

I've got the info of who to contact to help identify your medal. I contaced him because I have some very nice German medals that I knew nothing about and he pin-pointed them for me.

His name is Mr. Peter Dangerfield contact at- info@medal-medaille.com I emailed him first describing my medals and asked him him I could send him pics . He replied yes. If you go to his website medal-medaille you will see that he's a world class player in the "medals world". If I recall he's in England.

I may post my medals that I bought at my uncles auction, quite valuable in fact.

Interesting find! It may be a unit/commander type coin or celebrating a victory of sort. Where did you find it? HH, Mike

Mike,
Thank you so much for the lead on finding a expert in the field of German medals. I will contact him today and update the thread accordingly.

Great Find!
it appears to depict William II, who was actually a Friedrick Wilhelm, I guess he didn't want to be a 'Fifth',
his reign began in 1888, so in 1870 at age 21, he'd have been 'Kronprinz',

Hope you get more answers on it's history

Thanks Cap'n Crunch. Believe me, I am much more accurate with the M-4. :laughing7: I am very new to metal detecting and I am still trying to learn my detector (Garrett AT Pro).

Hi Bavaria Mike,

I was thinking that may be a possibility. In the US Army we call them challenge coins.

To answer your question, I found it in the Upstate of South Carolina. There is a long history of German settlement in this area, which is true even today. I myself am a second generation German American, with my father settling here in the 1960s. Recently there has been a very large influx of Germans with the arrival of the BMW plant.

Oh I believe you alright! I am not so shabby myself, I really love the feel of the M-4 in my hands. However all gun talk aside, that is one really great score you found, that will really look good in a display case for sure. PM me sometime, I would realy like to go out on a hunt with you. I don't live that far from you and I have several hot leads in your state. :icon_thumleft:
