Today I had 2 hours to hunt after work before my wife and daughter got home. I decided to hunt the old homestead where I found the duo of Wheat cents this week. The finds were slow coming. I dug several plow heads, and axe head, several more cents and a clad dime. I had a hit around an older tree that IDed between a zinc cent and a copper cent. I dug this very large medal (the size of a silver dollar). I was extremely excited. :icon_thumright: I got it home and cleaned it up. It appears to be a base medal coin or medal dated 1870. It has a plain edge. The obverse states "Friedrich Wilhelm Kronprinz Preussen" the reverse has the date 1870 along with 5 raised crests or coats of arms. Under the date is another seal with cannon, cannon balls, and banners. It also states something else in German that I can't quite make out. :icon_scratch: I anyone has any information on this medal, please share. :read2:

Thanks Cap'n Crunch. Believe me, I am much more accurate with the M-4. :laughing7: I am very new to metal detecting and I am still trying to learn my detector (Garrett AT Pro).

I am with you BR. I actually liked the M16A2 better, but still much more accurate with the M4 than this Bounty Hunter. I know a new MD and pinpointer ins in my future.

Thanks MaineRelic,

I have emailed the medal expert that Bulldog 1948 referred me to. If and when he gets back to me, I will update the post.

I am new here but have been lurking for years. I'd like to make a correction to a previous post. The bearded image on the medal is that of Crown Prince Frederick Wilhelm I. In 1870 he was the heir apparent of Kaiser Wilhelm I. He became emperor of a united Germany in 1888, if I remember my history correctly, but died of throat cancer after only about three months as Kaiser. He had married a daughter of Queen Victoria and it was their son who then became Kaiser Wilhelm II.

I'm speculating here but 1870 marked the end of the Franco Prussian was so perhaps the medal was a commerative issue in honor of the German victory.
