Found this today while doing a quick 5 minute hunt while driving my brother somewhere. I was suprised to find it was an 1873 IHP in super condition for being ground dug! I realized that there is a rare double liberty variety, and I was wondering if this could be one! Can anyone tell if it is a double liberty and any suggestions on how to clean the coin better but not ruin the coin?

It may be hard to tell in its current state, but some of the more seasoned coin collectors may be able to tell if it is or isn't the double liberty variety.

Doesn’t look like a double to me. I wouldn’t clean the coin.

Probably shouldn't clean it becuase 1873 is also a Key Date and this one is in good shape!

I think yours is an open 3 which is the less rare option. Still an amazing find though

The reason they say to never clean a coin is so the grade doesn't get sent into the "Details" territory. This one is already there. If you have another IH Cent with similar dirt on it, I would practice with the other one first by soaking it in hydrogen peroxide. (One person said they warm up the peroxide first.) Get an eye dropper to flush off any loose dirt after soaking.

Verdi-care, which is a hard product to find anymore, is great to put on copper. It conditions the coin and puts a protective layer on it to stop oxidation.

Good luck and let us know if you are able to get it looking any better.
