I went detecting at Quarry Hill park today and found this 1892-S Barber Half and the 1947-D Roosevelt Dime.
I was having a little trouble digging the sod out. There was a rock about 2 inches down and I jam ed the digging tool in on an angle and hit the coin. Who would have guessed it would be a key date. I got an older coin book and it says $250. in G-4.
Any Ideas as to how much it's worth now. roger

Ouch!! As hard as the dirt was where I was hunting I was scared I ws going to do the same thing!

Don't worry too much about the scratch Rodger,
it's now part of it's history. :notworthy:

Congrats on that key date Barber. Not sure of value now, but heaven forbid whatever you do, don't CLEAN it! Oh, the horror of a cleaned coin! (Personally, I could not care less if I clean a coin or not, even a key date, because it's my coin for as long as I live).

awesome dime!!!! Awesome half!!!! i would be very happy with that find!!!

awesome!! those barber 1/2s are fun to dig nice hunt! krazyhorses

Scratch one of those anytime, if it helped me fine one. Nice! I love Barber Half's.

Thanks for the replies and dig a big plug so you don't damage you finds.

We are more than a few, almost all of us have scratched a coin or three.
But only the few, the shameless, and the haunted, can lay claim to killing a key date.
Decades from now, you may laugh.
Big hunk of silver though, ya gotta admit.

Gee, all the pain has gone away now. Some how I fell better.
When I started detecting years ago I use to probe for my coins sometimes with my hunting knife. I was lucky that I didn't find coins with a lot of value. That was a nice 14-d you found. Maybe the scratch could be buffed out.

Nice silvers :icon_thumright:
I've done a few in also, slaughtered this once fine coin.
