Went and hunted a vacant lot with sjvalleyhunter last night. Didn't find much but did end up with an old pad lock, $100 peso and a 1909 IH penny "s" mint! I'm happy.

It is in very good shape. You can read the liberty. Get it professionally graded and encapsulated. Could be a $700+ coin.

Are you using a price guide from 1984? You're looking at an VF-EF 09-S IHP, which carries a collector book value of about $500-650. It's my non-expert opinion that $700 is high for that coin, but people are excited to see one. As an environmentally damaged specimen, I'd knock $150-$200 off the top and say you're left with about a $400 coin.

The following example is hacked to pieces, and it found a new home for $300 - Indian Head Small Cent 1909s | eBay / (And eBay sell values are much closer to wholesale than retail...)

In fact, I don't recall the last 1909 S IHP posted that was dug, and dug in such nice condition, so for that, I'm voting banner. It's worth more than most gold coins that make the banner.

I'm gonna try and get it graded.

I would call the grading service first and ask how they will grade a dug copper coin - they will probably tell you that it will be graded as "corroded" or "environmentally damaged" although it is in great shape. If you were going to get it graded to sell it, skip on the grade - collectors will pay for that key date to fill a collection.

Found my second one this morning. Sjvalleyhunter and I did a park hunt. Came across my these. 1909s IH, 1901 IH and a silver sleigh .925

i'm a little jellie. I found a 1909 earlier this year, myself. Problem was, someone erased the IH and scratched in Abe Lincoln face. Just my luck. Really nice find, man!
