1909 - VDB Lincoln Penny

When I saw this photo last week on yardsalesearch.com for an upcoming sale I almost had a heart attack. I don't know a lot about coins, but I do know that one of these with the "S" (San Francisco) mint mark is worth around $1K. The big mystery was whether this one had it or not --- it didn't.
I felt like $10 was a fair price for the first ever Lincoln Penny in what I estimate to be lower end G-4 condition. The V.D.B is on the bottom reverse side and is the initials of the designer Victor David Brenner. A limited number of these pennies were minted with his initials during 1909 which commemorated Lincoln's 100th birthday.
It wasn't the "holy grail" of Lincoln pennies as I'd hoped, but still a reasonably priced tiny piece of history....

Did you get the silver at a reasonable price? I love yard sale coins. I always ask, rarely ever score them at a yard sale.

My coin dealer and I were talking and he pulled out a small box of coins and handed me a coin to keep. It was a 1909 S VDB in mint condition. I was thankful after looking at it with my loupe but wondered why he would give it to me. It was counterfeit. ;(

It even fooled him when he bought it. That little box contained all the counterfeits he bought over many years.
