It was 12 years ago today. I found my first gold coin. I remember that day, while exploring an old wagon trail, I came across a small flat spot. I started detecting with my Garrett 250, and I was surprised when this beautiful coin popped up out of the ground.

I remember coming home that day feeling motivated. And now I can say that I love this hobby. My personal record is three gold coins. What can you tell me? Do you have any interesting stories?

Excellent record of 3 gold coins! I’d love to find just one! My interesting story? About 10 years ago I won a “naming contest” for a new detector on the market. The Detectnix company named their new machine the “Quest Pro”….. yeah, I came up with that. Now Quest is their company name lol.

3 gold coins is awesome. I'd love to find one some day. My mom found a 2 1/2 dollar cold coin under an old rug in a house she bought. Been swinging my detectors over it every time I get a new machine. Pull tab signal every time.

That's great. I'm familiar with that brand of detectors; it's widely used in Mexico.

That's what I do, too—that way I can get an idea of how it sounds on the new machine.

My story is that one day when I was doorknocking, the guys said yes as usual and I sterted detecting, but then He re-emerged with a big knife. He showed us it and said it was a relic from the 1800s but it was obviously brand new modern. He extended his arm and ran it in front of us. Of course that freaked us out, and when he returned inside, we got out of there.

But that’s the story I tell my friends to this day.

Another time a man approached us with a crowbar in his backpack but thatt’s another story.
