Your Merc appears to have a San Fransisco Mint Mark.

Most tokens of the type you dug are from the Civil War era & later.

Nice job !! I would be making several return trips to that area ! ;)

Most I'd do for cleaning that would be soap n water then a month long soaking in olive oil.
You could try sticking it in a potato for a couple of days, which would clean it good.
Problem is that sometimes the coin [I've tried it with a few crusted up wheat pennies] comes out looking a ghastly orange, sometines it doesn't.

WOW, that merc is in such great shape. Can't help you on the cleaning but that is an awesome token.

Soaking it in vinegar will clean it but , it may clean it too much . I would pour some vinegar in a bowl and dip a tooth Brush in it and then brush the coin with it . Running the coin under cold water will stop the acid action of the vinegar between treatments . This way you can control the amount of patina you remove . You just want to remove the crud . When done polish with paste wax to seal it and post a finished picture for us .
