1921 City of San Diego Chauffeur's Badge and bronze Madonna medal
Just when I'm ready to stick in fork in my dump site, I find this cool bronze medallion, depicting a friar giving a noogie to someone or something and a madonna on the other side. The noogie side reads "S.ALPH.M.CON.SS.REDEM" and the other reads "MADONNA DEL PERPETUO SOCCORSO"
I even found a numismatic society link to this type of medallion:
http://numismatics.org/collection/0000.999.15234
Those Italians know their bronze - I saw lots of great bronze pieces at the Pompei exhibit here in San Diego, along with a bunch of gold coins recovered from the excavations.
I also managed to pull my second wub.gif 1921 chauffeur's badge from this site, but this one is a City of San Diego badge, not a CA state one like my first.I've now found state-issued and city-issued badges from CA, both from 1921. There is a website called "Chauffeur Badges of North America" (http://taxibadges.com/) that shows the types and solicits photos of those that are not in the current collection. I submitted a photo of this one since it is missing from their site - they only have a 1941 example. I'm not sure of the worth of this San Diego badge, but it is likely more scarce than the state-issued ones. The population of the city of San Diego was only 74,000 in 1920 and 112,000 county-wide. Also found a period toy car, which is still being cleaned and a 1917-D wheat. Going back this evening. Thanks for looking!
