1923 buffalo nickel and a whats it

Found my third buffalo nickel today a 1923 amazingly it was right on top of the soil. Also this strange cross looking thing about 6inchs deep. Any ideas?

Nice digs, Buffs with dates are uncommon, on the whats-it I no idea , maybe a holder for a lantern ?

Hmm could be I will have to look at pictures. It's pretty roached but it looks like it was really nice at one time.
