Going thru my 1958 pennies and looking for that rare double die and found this one with a peculiar looking 9 in the date. Was wondering what kind of die error could have caused it. I've included a 'normal' looking 9 to compare it with. Thanks!

I moved ya from HELP! over to COINS for more exposure.

It is a die chip. The mint seemed to be plagued by them in the fifties.

Die chip, or cud filled 9.

Die chip, or cud filled 9.

It's a die chip, but not a cud. Cuds are connected to the rim. The correct term for what the op is searching for is a "doubled" die, not double.
