So, it was a normal day, I was sitting on my couch playing a game, when all the sudden my dad walked in.

He said ?I got this in change today,? and flipped a coin to me. I caught it, thinking ?he probably found a Susan B Anthony that was mistaken for a quarter.?

Turns out, it was a half dollar.

It was interesting. I?ve never seen one of these in circulation. I thought they didn?t make or use half dollars anymore. Was I mistaken?

Either way, it?s an interesting find.

They can end up in circulation still logs of them out there. When my little brothers where younger they stole a few of mine I stashed away and used them so lol they still get around. I have a bunch of them still in my collection

They've been minting them for over 56 years now (1964 through 2020). Strange you haven't run across one before now. I get them fairly often in change, and occasionally with the detector.

I give them as change all the time. It's funny to see the reaction on peoples faces when they receive one, especially the younger generation. Most ask what they are, and are they real ? Older people will usually say "Wow, I haven't seen one of these in a while". It's still nice to find one in circulation though. Neat find.

Jnicholes,

While the Kennedy half has been minted since 1964, the last time they were minted for circulation was 2001. Since 2002 they have only been minted for collectors meaning they are only issued in uncirculated sets, numismatic rolls, or other special collector products - they are only being struck for numismatic purposes. As a note, you can usually order rolls/boxes from your bank, they are your best bet for finding silver in coin rolls. Good luck with your hunts. Walt

Found these today in change.

Maybe because of the coin shortage the people are bringing half dollars out to use. Who knows?

It's unique. For example I once ordered $100 in $2 bills from my bank and started giving them out as change to customers on April Fool's day. Customers were AMAZED that $2 bills were actually real money (most didn't know $2 bills existed). They started bringing their friends to our store simply to get the $2 bills as change and when I ran low a lady insisted on giving me $5 for the last 2 which were both 1976's I had been saving from the rest. They literally could have all just gone to the bank and asked for $2 bills, but they didn't know.
