Please help me understand what is going on here

Plating coins of all types was common in grade school chemistry 45-50 years ago.

Time for more coffee.

Circa 1979 JCWhitney & Co. home plating, all the rage. Along with their junk 8-track players.

You can test it yourself. If you have a scale ... 1971 to date Copper-nickel clad: 11.34 g...
1965-1970 40% silver clad: 11.50 g ...
1964 90% silver: 12.50 g

And don't forget the 'Drop Test' . Hold it 6" above a hard surface and drop. Listen to the sound that it makes. Compare that to the sound made by coins of those year ranges.

If it is a lead fake, the drop report will be more of a "thud" than a ring.

Does the tissue test work on silver plated coins?

In '71 and '77 the mint made some Kennedy halves out of silver clad planchets by mistake. You may have one of them. If so, probably a rare find. Gary
