i decided to go out today as another storm is upon us i tried some fields behind my place quickly, just to get a feel and also couldnt dig no more than 2".i dug a couple shotshells and a nice iron ring my best finds today were on top of the ground, ive added pics i dont know if they came out or not but an old vintage/ antique underwriters laboratories inc. 4 GALLON ,HAND FIRE EXTINGUISHER ,from natkin & company. with a boot brace leg tested number 370246 i also found a bunch of stainless steel and aluminum what a walk back with this stuff next i go with wheel barrel,there gonna make this property a development have to hit it now. HH

Thought you'd want to know... your find that you described simply as an "iron ring" is half of a horsegear "snaffle bit." That type dates from before the civil war through the early-1900s. They were used both by the Military and by civilians.

About the time-dating of yours:
I should mention, snaffle-bits are still being manufactured today... but the "bar" on yours appears to have a blacksmith-forged loop for connecting it to the ring, instead of being a modern machine-made one.

You're welcome, SliverOfSilver. Always glad to hear that I helped save a good relic from the scrap-pile. :) As you see by comparing the shape of yours with the intact/undamaged one I posted, the smaller end-loop on yours broke, which is why your component of the snaffle-bit got discarded.
